Our Story
Atelier MiniMakers is a creative initiative and flexible hub for hands-on making, centered on the detailed art of miniatures. It was founded by Patray Lui, an interaction designer and maker with a background in environmental and interaction design, and nearly twenty years of experience in design innovation.
MiniMakers is where I translate my professional practice into shared creative experiences. My work explores how making at a small scale can deepen understanding, sharpen observation, and invite curiosity. It unfolds across two interconnected realms of miniature making.
Miniature Interactive Objects focus on small-scale, functional builds that introduce real-world mechanisms—such as levers, pulleys, wind-driven elements, and moving structures. Built by learners using guided kits, these projects make abstract principles of physics and engineering tangible, turning observation and experimentation into playful discovery.
Complex Miniature Dioramas extend this practice into authored, narrative-driven worlds. Working across multiple scales, I modify and reimagine curated kits through material exploration, spatial design, and detailed finishing. This process is slower and more reflective, cultivating patience, intentionality, and a deep appreciation for atmosphere, story, and craft.
Both approaches share a belief that working in miniature encourages focus, care, and imagination. By slowing down and working with the hands, making becomes a meaningful counterpoint to screen-based experiences—one that nurtures problem-solving, perseverance, and creative confidence.
I currently bring this philosophy into education through the Mini Makers afterschool program, piloted at an international school in The Hague. The program invites students to engage with the physical world through building, experimentation, and play. All workshops are conducted in English and are open to both international and local makers.
Alongside MiniMakers, I also run Atelier Edulis, a separate studio dedicated to the craft of layered, meticulous patisserie. While distinct in form, both practices are rooted in the same philosophy: careful making, where detail, intention, and joy quietly converge.
I’m always open to conversations around collaborations, workshop ideas, or custom projects.
